Crazy Rich Asians has survived impossible representation standards
By Steven Nguyen Scaife
- In this Article, it boasts about how Asians have long embraced impossible representations and standards amongst themselves. What this article made me understood is stereotypical biases and actions does not define all races inadequately, instead does define character and style, of such race, not just Asians, but Blacks, Native Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, etc. The movie, “Crazy Rich Asians”, dissects the marginalized ideal , a movie like Crazy Rich Asians could simply be what it is: a light, enjoyable good rom-com that dramatizes the lives of the wealthy, as white films have been allowed to do for more than a century.
As a filmmaker, Crazy Rich Asians helps with representation that trivializes image. In this day of age, it is rare to find a movie that primarily makes the audience see a different viewpoint from other movies that have Asians in them. Some complain that it is a misrepresentation of Singapore’s diversity (where the movie is mainly taking place), where they shot the film and has a main character’s nationality. But I’ll say it’s “Asian enough”.
- I would like to pay homage on the Article I have reviewed on, criticizing and breakpoints in “Crazy Rich Asians has survived impossible representation standards” on https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/28/17788198/crazy-rich-asians-movie-representation-diversity-constance-wu-henry-golding-awkwafina By Steven Nguyen Scaife Aug 28, 2018, 12:48pm EDT .
